Magical Music for Life Foundation is thrilled to present its first “Tunes in Times Square” benefit concert Sunday,
May 6, 2012, in Times Square, between 46th & 47th Streets and Broadway, NYC. The goal of the concert is to raise awareness and funds
for the production of a free, downloadable album of original songs written specifically for children with special
needs, as well as to foster community spirit, understanding, and goodwill.
The event will be a sing-a-thon,
where preselected, talented children will take turns singing throughout the entire day raising money from
pledges they have collected ahead of time (much like running marathons raise funds). Many actors and children from
past and present Broadway shows have also committed to performing, and children from the special needs community will
also have the thrilling opportunity to share the microphone.
While music is magic therapy for us all, it is especially important for those with special needs. According to
Barbara Crowe, past President of the National Association for Music Therapy, "Music can make the difference
between withdrawal and awareness.” Studies have shown that children in the autism spectrum respond to
music differently than spoken language, hence learning for these children is made easier when words are
coupled with rhythm and song.
Magical Music for Life is embarking on a project to create a new collection of original songs written especially
for children with special needs. The debut album is going to be centered on the theme, "A Day in the Life of a
Child". The music and lyrics are designed specifically to: a) help teach social skills, motor skills, and activities of
daily living; b) work on sensory desensitization for auditorily avoidant children; and c) facilitate many facets of
language development. This album will become part of a library of songs created to serve the specific needs
of therapists and parents in working on developing various skills and as an accessible resource for people
everywhere … at no charge.
ABOUT MAGICAL MUSIC
Magical Music for Life, founded in 1999, is a nonprofit charitable organization whose mission is to produce a
wide range of musical projects which deliver positive messages to children. In addition, as a way to reinforce
self-confidence and further self-esteem, each of these projects is designed to enable children to perform/
participate in the professional productions. These projects are also used to generate income and awareness for
children's charities across the country as well as to be performed in hospitals, Boys and Girls Clubs and inner
city schools. (www.magicalmusic.org for more information)
Magical Music has produced two original family musicals (The Adventures of Zak and Russell, the Hermit
Crab), which have been performed throughout the northeast, written songs for several national well-known
charities and children with special needs, and performed at such prestigious venues as the White House Easter
Egg Roll, The United Nations for the first World Autism Awareness Day, Shea Stadium, and the Tribeca Film
Festival.
Tunes in Times Square will be Magical Music’s third benefit concert involving the participation of hundreds of
children. In 2005, the Magical Music for Life produced the benefit concert One Town … One Voice which
raised over $150,000 for Habitat Humanity's Katrina Relief Fund and, in 2009, it produced another One
Town... One Voice concert to benefit the national, celebrity-driven charity, Stand Up to Cancer.
